Description

The building contains three to seven storeys. At its heart is the glass-roofed atrium, which contains one of the world’s largest wooden staircases. This was installed without any central supports, meaning that a particular challenge during construction was calculating how to accommodate the point loads of the beams. The stairs are also subjected to high levels of mechanical wear and tear through use. Adequate slip resistance also needed to be provided in order to guarantee the safety of staff and customers.

Description

'

Sustainability played a major role in the choice of materials: The wood for the staircase came from sustainable forestry and the wood waste generated during the construction of the staircase was also reused. The products used were also chosen for their sustainable credentials. At the same time, they also need to withstand the high loads that are exerted on the stairs and floors by numerous visitors over long periods of time.'
