Dirt stores moisture and pollutants and prevents the surface drying out. This is why it should always be removed. The following applies: as careful as possible, as intensive as necessary!
Rendered façades are very diverse in terms of shape and colour. The reason for this is the variety of colour and form they allow. The traditional mortar renders for façades are lime-cement renders. In addition, there are heat insulating renders that are made of a thermally-insulating undercoat and a water repelling top render. They are used on solid walls of an average thickness and combine good insulation with corresponding physical properties.
In the past, render acted as a weather protection layer that could be covered with various materials and made to look uniform; later, builders opted for render because of its versatility and adaptability, and also the wide range of application possibilities. In addition to their natural colour, renders can be produced in any other colour, either by applying an additional coating or by means of pigments that colour the render. Plasters also offer the possibility to create plastic or ornamental designs on façade surfaces.
A rendered façade can age in many ways. For instance, a change of weather can exert extreme loads on the wall structure. This leads to cracks, water damage and detachment of the façade layers. Darker areas, different materials, renders on cornices and mouldings, and paints with different properties and density are particularly sensitive.
An exterior render can be highly durable if installed correctly, if constructive measures are taken, such as roof overhangs, water hammer cornices, stone bases and in particular if regular maintenance is carried out. Remmers offers the right systems for this.
By installing so-called ‘soft segments’ it has been possible to develop silicic acid ester-based elasticised stone strengtheners that demonstrate a greater tendency to create a film than classic strengthening products. Elasticised stone strengtheners are excellently suited for structural strengthening of valuable renders.
Buildings change. Dirt and air pollutants collect on the façades over time. Moisture can penetrate. If renovation work is scheduled the façades are usually cleaned, but this is often not enough.
It is often not necessary to completely remove the old render even if it has a few cracks. In cases like this, it has proven expedient to rework the façade with thin-layer renders.
Stucco elements lend renders a special finish. They stand for elegant and traditional workmanship. Building façades decorated with stucco dominate many historical cityscapes.
A hydrophobizing or fluid greening protection agent can be applied for long-term prevention of moss, fungi and algae infestation. It forms a depot of the active ingredient in the subsurface that only becomes effective if an attack actually occurs. Effective protection is ensured for a very long period.
Façade paints not only serve the colour design of the building but also its protection. The main task is to keep moisture and therefore contaminants away from the building, whilst at the same time preserving an adequate level of breathability.
